Production schools, emerging at the end of the XIXth century (France, 1882) have been established in many European countries: Denmark, Germany, Finland, France and Austria. The centre of every production school is the workshop and a wide range is available; it goes from traditional workshops of carpentry and metalwork to media and theater.
Key aspects are the access to employment and further training of socially disadvantaged young people without continued school education or professional training as well as their preparation for continuing training or their entry onto the employment market. At the core of the educational concept is learning by producing – that is, knowledge and skills are conveyed especially by working in concrete areas of production.
